Melvin ("Mel") Pender, Jr. is a former American athlete, winner of gold medal in 4x100 m relay at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
Mel Pender was a decorated Vietnam war combat veteran, serving in the U.S. Army for 21 years and retiring at the rank of captain in 1976. While in the U.S. Army, early in his service, Pender took up athletics, where his incredible quickness was noticed in camp football games. His progress was remarkable and he was selected to the 1964 Olympic Team but hampered by injury he did not medal.
At the Mexico Olympics, Pender made it to the 100m final where his explosive start and exceptional acceleration brought him to the lead mid way through the race. But he faded slightly and finished sixth. In the relay he was chosen to run the second leg and he performed that duty exceptionally. The American 4x100 m relay team won the gold medal in a new world record of 38.19.
Now is a retired Captain and Vietnam War Veteran who became ill with Agent Orange Disease. This disease caused him to have Leukemia and Prostate cancer at the age of 63. His treatment was successful, and the experience gave him much compassion for people struggling with major illnesses. It was in taking on total care and responsibility of both of his elderly parents that gave him a true appreciation for the service that care professionals provide.
"We look after our parents because they have taken care of us. We can't leave them stranded without our support. I had to find a way to balance my life while caring for my parents and needed the help of others to do this. Finding the right person who fit my standards of care was a challenge. I believe in giving excellent customer service and it is my hope that Helping Hands Senior Services will provide that for you."
